Victor Wembanyama To Play In February World Cup Qualifiers

Jan 23, 2023 9:13 AM

Likely number one overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft Victor Wembanyama has been called up to the France national team for 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers. France will play two qualifiers at the end of February against Czech Republic and Lithuania.

France has already qualified for this edition of the World Cup. They are using their final two qualifying games to continue to evaluate their non-NBA and non-EuroLeague players.

Wembanyama played in two previous qualifiers for France. He averaged 19.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, as the French team clinched a spot in this summer's World Cup back in mid-November.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines. The event will run from late-August to mid-September.

Andrew Wiggins Won't Commit To Three-Year Cycle For Team Canada

Dec 31, 2022 9:59 AM

Andrew Wiggins would love to represent his home country at the Olympics someday. But Wiggins isn't interested in making the commitment Team Canada now requires of their players.

Canada Basketball recently announced that they would have a core group of 14 players who represent the team during a three-year cycle. That sort of long-term commitment isn't one Wiggins had an interest in making.

“They wanted a long-term commitment. Right now, (my priority) is for the Golden State Warriors. I got kids. I got family. I got a life outside of basketball,” Wiggins explained. “So, to commit three years to the Warriors and to Canada Basketball, it wouldn't make sense to me… I spend the whole time in-season with the Warriors, and summertime I get to decide.”

Team Canada coach Nick Nurse said that players who don't commit to the three-year cycle will "have to hope there is a spot" for them when it's time to pick the Olympics squad. Wiggins hopes that could include him, but he's got no hard feelings if it doesn't.

“I would love to play if they made the Olympics,” Wiggins said. “But I won't do no three-year commitment, you know? If not — I wouldn't lose no sleep over it if they didn’t let me. If they didn't, that would be on them.”

Steve Kerr Hopes Kevin Durant Will Play In 2024 Olympics

Dec 22, 2022 8:29 AM

Steve Kerr is taking over the reins from Gregg Popovich as the head coach of USA Basketball. Kerr is hoping a familiar face will join his squad at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Kerr joked that he'd make a "recruiting pitch" to Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets to join Team USA for another run. Durant and Kerr were previously together on the Golden State Warriors. Durant has said it's too early for him to commit to playing in the next Olympics.

Durant has played for Team USA in three different Olympics. He's helped lead the United States to the gold medal in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 (played in 2021) games. Durant is also the all-time leading scorer in Team USA history.

USA Basketball Will Play 2023 World Cup Group Games In Manila

Dec 12, 2022 9:17 AM

The United States Men's Basketball team hasn't qualified for the 2023 FIBA World Cup yet. But Team USA knows where they'll be playing when they do.

The US team will play all of their group stage games in Manila in the Philippines. The Philippines is one of three host nations, along with Indonesia and Japan. Each of the three host nations were allowed to select one country to play all of their games in their region.

The Philippines selected the United States. Indonesia selected Canada, while Japan picked Slovenia.

USA Basketball can qualify for the World Cup by winning either of their two remaining qualifiers against Uruguay or Brazil in late-February. The US also holds most of the tiebreakers, should they not defeat either Uruguay or Brazil. It's expected, as it has throughout qualifying, that Team USA will be made up of players from the G League or overseas leagues. NBA players are then expected to form the World Cup roster.
